Fort Bend ISD to start school year with no extracurricular activities - Houston Chronicle

No extracurricular activities, including athletics, will occur in Fort Bend ISD to start the school year with the district declaring it will begin 2020-2021 entirely online.

Considering rising coronavirus cases, the district says it will phase in in-person learning with small groups but the timeline for that is currently unknown. The Texas Education Agency says school districts can opt to start the academic year online for three weeks, while still receiving state funding if all students in the district have computer and internet access at home.

FBISD, Houston's fourth-largest district, says the move’s intention is to give students, parents and staff an opportunity to adjust to online learning and safety procedures.

It is significant news concerning the start of the athletic year for FBISD’s 11 high schools that compete in the University Interscholastic League.

Fall football practice is scheduled to start Aug. 3 for these schools, as with other schools around the state. Volleyball’s regular season starts Aug. 10 for various schools across the state as well.

FBISD’s move could impact schools in other districts inside the athletics realm. Lamar Consolidated ISD’s George Ranch shares a Class 6A football and volleyball league with seven FBISD schools.

Outside athletics, this may also start a domino effect concerning other school districts’ plans for returning back to school in the fall. Round Rock ISD is already calling for the TEA to delay in-person learning. Round Rock ISD is also considering moving it’s entire curriculum online for the school year’s first three weeks.
