LANSING — The spread of COVID-19 is prompting more local schools to start the next school year with remote classes, while others will give parents the choice to send their children back to their classrooms.
The Holt Public Schools, Okemos Public Schools and Williamston Community Schools Boards of Education all plan to offer instruction online for students to start the semester as a precaution against the coronavirus.
Grand Ledge Public Schools students will have the option to pick between online instruction or returning to their classrooms for in-person classes.
Mason Public Schools will start the school year with remote learning, and school board members are expected to review a proposed in-person instruction plan on Sept. 14. East Lansing Public Schools Board of Education is also considering starting remotely.
Lansing School District and Waverly Community Schools both previously committed to moving classes online through at least the early part of the fall.
The Lansing-area is currently under Phase 4 of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s MI Safe Schools plan which allows for in-person classes. Schools will have to close and offer only remote courses if the pandemic worsens and Whitmer drops the region to Phase 3 or lower.
