Justin Verlander will start on Opening Day against the Mariners, Astros manager Dusty Baker confirmed Wednesday.
Baker said Lance McCullers Jr. is “probably further ahead” than Zack Greinke in starting the second game of the season-opening series. McCullers Jr. has impressed in intrasquad scrimmages during workouts, including throwing five shutout innings on Tuesday.
“It hurt Greinke the other day when we couldn’t work out,” said Baker, referring to a missed workout over a delay in COVID-19 testing results.
Baker does expect Greinke to throw in a Thursday intrasquad scrimmage along with Josh James, who just reported to camp Monday after the birth of his daughter.
Verlander won the AL Cy Young Award in 2019, going 21-6 with 300 strikeouts and a 2.58 ERA.
