Shackelford, Bowen, McKinley & Norton has added a patent practice in Texas as the midsize firm Wednesday brought on a group of five intellectual property lawyers and a corporate partner, all coming from Winstead.

It’s the second time Shackelford Bowen has grabbed a large group from Dallas-based Am Law 200 firm Winstead. In June 2019, a group of seven commercial litigators left Winstead to open a Houston office for Shackelford Bowen, which is a business, aviation and entertainment firm with other offices in Dallas, Frisco, Fort Worth and Austin, along with Nashville, Tennessee, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Shackelford Bowen is among a group of firms continuing to push forward with lateral hiring, even as the coronavirus adds economic uncertainty to the legal market.

“We’re adding some extremely quality attorneys with a nice book of business. We just seem to be the beneficiary of some changes in the legal community right now,” said firm founder John Shackelford.

The lateral group includes intellectual property partners Ross Robinson, David Lovell and David Odom and of counsel Stan Moore in Dallas, and partner Henry “Bud” Ehrlich in Houston. Corporate partner Robert McCormick joined in Dallas.

Shackelford said the firm has an entertainment-oriented trademark, licensing and litigation practice in its Nashville office, but the new group adds other aspects of the IP practice such as patent prosecution.

He said the Winstead group is a good fit from his perspective, as he evaluates them by his personal standards of whether the potential laterals are good people and good lawyers and if they would bring something to the firm that makes economic sense.

With the new hires, Shackelford Bowen has 68 lawyers, he said.

Robinson said they view the move to Shackelford Bowen as a chance to start up a patent practice at an “excellent firm” with people they like.

“There is a lot of flexibility. They are allowing us to build out the patent practice the way we want to do it,” he said.

He said the group does patent prosecution, litigation and opinions, and its clients include Bell Textron and Lennox.

“These are all fine lawyers and were excellent colleagues,” Winstead chairman and CEO David Dawson said in a statement. “We certainly wish them the best on their new endeavors as they join Shackelford.”
