Detroit to start mass vaccinations of seniors 75 and older on Wednesday - WDIV ClickOnDetroit

DETROIT – With vaccines rolling into Michigan the City of Detroit announced it is ready to start vaccinating seniors starting Wednesday.

But the city is taking a different approach only allowing seniors 75 and older to take part in this first phase.

Vaccinations will begin Wednesday at the TCF Center in Detroit.

Phone lines for Detroit appointments became active Monday with 100,000 calls made.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan is not happy about all those calls.

“Here is our biggest problem nearly half were not up for appointment,” said Duggan.

Some Detroit residents who are 65 are upset about not being able to get the vaccine.

And then there’s mixed messages from Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer about opening up the next phase to those 65 and older, but Detroit is focused on those 75 and up.

Wayne County is making the move to send anyone 65 and older to their health providers. Those heath systems are stepping up to handle the vaccinations.

The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in Michigan has risen to 525,612 as of Tuesday, including 13,501 deaths, state officials report.

Tuesday’s update includes 1,994 new cases and 100 additional deaths.
