FREMONT — Police said two juveniles were taken into custody after officers reportedly exchanged gunfire and closed streets during a search for a possibly armed person in an industrial area on the city’s west side.

A police department spokeswoman said officers were closing streets near Stevenson Boulevard and Boyce Road after attempting a traffic stop for a vehicle, when the occupants jumped out and fled on foot.

In a separate alert around 7 p.m., Newark police alerted residents to avoid Stevenson at Cherry Street, and suggested Mowry Avenue as an alternative route.

In a statement around 9 p.m. Tuesday, police said a patrol officer found a stolen vehicle around 4:45 p.m. near Cushing and Auto Mall parkways.

After waiting for other officers’ backup, the officer tried to stop the vehicle, which drove away north along Cushing before turning west onto Stevenson Boulevard.

When the vehicle stopped at Stevenson’s dead end, several people fled on foot. “Officers began chasing the suspects until one suspect fired several rounds at the pursuing officers,” police said. “Officers returned fire at the suspect and established a perimeter around the area.  No officers were injured during the exchange of gun fire.”

Two people, identified only as juveniles, were later taken into custody without injury. Police believe at least one other person managed to evade officers and do not know if that person was injured.
