There is an 80% chance we’ll have the season’s first tropical system by the weekend, according to the National Hurricane Center.

A non-tropical low pressure system has developed within a broad area of cloudiness and thunderstorms about 600 miles east-southeast of Bermuda. The low is expected to develop gale-force winds later today while it moves generally northward.

The low is forecast to move west and southwest over warmer waters on Friday and will likely become a short-lived subtropical cyclone near and to the northeast of Bermuda. The system is expected to move toward the north and northeast into a more hostile environment by late Sunday into Monday.

Formation chances for the next two days, high at 80%. The chance of formation over five days is high: 80%.

Also of note, there’s a disorganized area of cloudiness and thunderstorms over the western Gulf of Mexico associated with a surface trough of low pressure. Regardless of development, the system could produce heavy rainfall over portions of southeastern Texas and southwestern Louisiana on Friday and through the weekend.

The first named storm of 2021 will be called Ana.

Formation chances for the next two days are low at 20%. The chance of formation over five days is low: 20%.
