Conservative Slate of Candidates Hoping to Stop School Diversity Plan Wins Big in Southlake - The Texan

Carroll Independent School District, primarily located in the City of Southlake, has been engaged in a battle over the controversial Cultural Competence Action Plan (CCAP).

Tonight the school board candidates who plan to fight against the CCAP won a decisive victory for two seats on the school board.

Early results showed the conservative candidates leading by about 40 points. School board elections in Texas are non-partisan.

Hannah Smith, an attorney and mother of four, defeated Ed Hernandez. Cameron Bryan, a civil engineer and father of four, defeated Lynda Warner.

“Southlake, we did it!” Smith exclaimed at a victory party on Saturday night. “I’m so grateful to the voters for their confidence in me. The goodness of the people of Southlake is on display for the whole country to see.”

Bryan proclaimed the victory a mandate and said, “They can’t argue with us. Hannah and I will be leaders, and we’ve got your back.” He added that the way Southlake has been portrayed by the national media is “bogus.”

The newly elected board members will be installed on May 12.

Currently, a restraining order in a civil lawsuit based on open meetings violations forbids the school board from further consideration of CCAP.

Additionally, the school board president, Michelle Moore, and vice-president, Todd Carlton, were recently indicted by a grand jury for Open Meetings Act violations involving a quorum of board members discussing CCAP via text message last summer.

CCAP is touted as a plan to address racial issues and was proposed by the District Diversity Council. It has come under criticism from members of the community as having a political agenda that could infringe on parental rights and punish students who don’t adhere to more progressive ideologies.

The two school board candidates ran as part of a slate of five candidates, three of which were running for places in the city government.

Newly elected Mayor John Huffman said, “Tonight is a statement. We saw a community rise up and reclaim its narrative. That narrative is that we are a good and generous community, and we won’t let outside voices tell us we are broken.”

Huffman defeated Debra Edmondson, who had previously run for state representative against Rep. Giovanni Capriglione (R-Keller).

Also elected by large margins were Amy Torres-Lepp and Randy Robbins.
