That Tyler Glasnow-Shohei Ohtani matchup will have to wait.
The Angels said their talented two-way standout won’t make his scheduled start against the Rays tonight after being hit by a pitch on the right elbow while batting in Sunday’s game as the DH. Lefty Jose Quintana, who was to pitch Tuesday for the Angels, will make the start on regular rest.
Angels manager Joe Maddon said they felt Ohtani was “too sore” to handle the stress of pitching, but was okay to hit so he is in the lineup at DH.
For now the Angels are moving up their other starters, who have been in a six-man rotation, to cover the absence, with ex-Ray Alex Cobb set to work Tuesday’s game. Maddon said depending on how Ohtani responds, he could come back to start Wednesday or Thursday against the Rays.
Glasnow, the Rays’ hard-throwing ace, and his teammates were looking forward to facing Ohtani, who has impressed through the first month of the season with what he has done on the mound and at the plate, sometimes in the same game.
In three starts, Ohtani is 1-0, 3.29 with 23 strikeouts in 13 2/3 innings. In 25 games, Ohtani is hitting .263 with eight homers, 20 RBIs and a .917 OPS.
First pitch tonight from Anaheim is slated for 9:38 p.m.
Rays manager Kevin Cash said reliever Pete Fairbanks (shoulder) looked “very, very good” in another 12- to 14-pitch simulated inning Monday. Cash said they’ll check to see how he feels Tuesday and that he is “very close” to being activated.
Also, Cash said reliever Collin McHugh (back) will throw another multi-inning session Wednesday and then be re-evaulated.
