Stop & Shop is slated to allow customers who are fully vaccinated for coronavirus to go maskless in its stores in Massachusetts starting May 29, the date that all remaining COVID-19-related business restrictions are expected to be lifted, according to the company.
When mask mandates are lifted in Massachusetts on May 29, Stop & Shop will no longer require that fully vaccinated individuals wear face coverings in its locations, the grocery store chain noted in a statement. However, the company said it “will continue to strongly encourage everyone to do so.”
Masks will continue to be required in all Stop & Shop pharmacies for staff providing coronavirus vaccinations and customers getting their shots, according to the company.
“Stop & Shop will continue to require that associates and customers wear masks in all locations where state and local mandates remain in place,” the company said.
The company added that it’s “continuing to implement enhanced cleaning protocols and safety measures across all states in which we operate.” Stop & Shop will continue to offer special shopping hours as well for customers who are 60 years of age or older or immunocompromised.
“Per CDC and state guidelines, people who are not fully vaccinated must continue to wear masks and social distance,” Stop & Shop noted.
On Monday, Gov. Charlie Baker Massachusetts announced that the commonwealth will lift all remaining “industry COVID restrictions and capacity limits” by May 29 and do away with its state of emergency on June 15. The Republican governor pointed out that the state is coming close to its goal of vaccinating 4.1 million residents by the first week of June.
Also starting May 29, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health is expected to issue a new order that will replace the state’s current masking rules with the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s new guidance, which says that fully vaccinated people can resume activities they did prior to the public health crisis without wearing a mask or physically distancing, except when required by federal, state or local regulations.
A person’s considered fully vaccinated two weeks after receiving the second shot of their two-dose Moderna or Pfizer vaccine or two weeks after receiving their single-dose Johnson & Johnson shot.
The public health department’s new guidance on May 29 will urge all unvaccinated residents to continue to mask up in most indoor settings and mandate the use of face coverings by everyone, whether vaccinated or unvaccinated, in certain places, including nursing homes, health care settings, schools and public and private transportation systems.
