DANBURY — Police say they are looking for a suspect who robbed and kidnapped a family with a child from a Stop & Shop parking lot on Sunday.

Erin Henry, a spokesperson for the Danbury Police Department, said the family reported that a man approached their car with a handgun and ordered them to unlock the doors of their car in the parking lot of the Newtown Road store around 5:30 p.m.

The suspect ordered the man to drive him to the Bank of America on Main Street where he forced him to withdraw $500, Henry said. The suspect then ordered the man to drive back to Newtown Road, Henry said. The family remained in the car the entire time, Henry said.

Before leaving, the suspect also stole an iPhone from the family, Henry said. Henry said the family consisted of three people, but did not provide their ages except to say that one of them was under 18.

The suspect was described as being between 30 and 40 years old and had a muscular build, Henry said.

Stop & Shop employees and shoppers had mixed reaction to the incident. Adela Rodriguez of Bridgeport, who has worked at Stop & Shop for 23 years, said she's concerned there's not enough security in the area.

"We work here every single day and we walk to the car and anybody could just rob us at gunpoint and nobody would help," she said, while sitting outside the store late Monday afternoon.

"Sometimes, people see things and they don't really help out," she added. "Every single day, I come here at 7:30 in the morning, and you never know,  anybody could just come up to me."

She added she's worried the safety situation will worsen.

"There's not enough people patrolling the area. There should be more police officers," she said.

Danbury resident Nancy Matzinger, however, said crime can happen anywhere and said it's important to "be alert."

"Unfortunately, you just have to be aware at all times. When I got out of my car, I kept dropping my keys. And every time I did that, I looked around to see if anybody was around me," said Matzinger. "I've seen videos online of people that have purses in their carts and people are just driving by lowering down their windows and grabbing things. I try not to have anything in my hands anymore"

Steve Barros, a Danbury resident, said the incident won't prevent him from shopping at Stop & Shop and added, the incident sounds like a "one off."

He also said he's not worried about getting robbed himself, since he would fight back.

"I'd probably be very loud if it were happening to me," he said.
