JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Black drivers were 95% more likely to be pulled over by Missouri police than white drivers last year, according to a report released Friday by the state Attorney General's Office.

Data from the office show last year marked the greatest disparity between stops of white and black drivers recorded in the two decades since the state first began compiling data.

Until now, the 2018 disparity rate had been the highest since the reports began in 2000. Black drivers in Missouri were 91% more likely than white motorists to be pulled over by police in 2018.

In the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson — where black, unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown was fatally shot by a white officer in 2014, sparking months of protests — black drivers were six times more likely to be pulled over than white drivers.

Data show black drivers were also 36% more likely to be arrested than whites.

The Missouri report comes amid nationwide protests over police treatment of black people following the death of a black man in Minneapolis police custody. George Floyd died after pleading that he could not breathe while handcuffed.
