Wet start to week likely brings flooding across water-logged state - The Detroit News

As rain moves across Michigan through Tuesday morning, lakeshores, waterways and low-lying areas are again submerged.

The National Weather Service has issued a lakeshore flood warning until 4 p.m. Tuesday for Wayne, Monroe, Bay, Huron, St. Clair, Sanilac Tuscola and Macomb counties.

Flood watches remain for much of the southeast Michigan area, with 2 to 3 inches of sometimes heavy rainfall, according to the National Weather Service.

"We're just in a pattern here where we have more unsettled weather," Sarah Pampreen, a meteorologist with the weather service, said Sunday.

The rainfall is caused by low pressure throughout the state, Pampreen said. Roads and streets may flood and small rivers and ponds can rise. If traveling, the weather service advised to take extra time, as some roads may be closed due to flooding.

The flood watch is in effect for Detroit, Pontiac, Warren, Ann Arbor, Saginaw, Flint, Midland, Bay City, Bad Axe, Caro, Sandusky, Owosso, Lapeer, Port Huron, Howell, Adrian and Monroe.

The high water and rains come after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers office in Detroit found new record high monthly mean water levels were set on lakes Michigan and Huron, St. Clair and Erie earlier this month.

Water levels forecast for May 1 were above their levels of one year ago for lakes Michigan, Huron, St. Clair and Erie, while lakes Superior and Ontario are below last year's levels, according to the Army Corps as May began.

The levels on lakes Michigan and Huron, which are measured as one body of water, and St. Clair and Erie are predicted to be 10, 2, and 3 inches, respectively, above their levels last year.

It's a situation residents and property owners across the state have been dealing with for a few years.

The lake level projections signal that Michigan property owners could continue to combat bluff and shoreline erosion, damage to coastal infrastructure and flooding. The rising lake levels represent long-term challenges for a region that has faced swings of the lakes' extreme highs and lows.

Rising levels are expected through August, according to Corps' projections.

Scattered showers are forecast to return Friday with temperatures in the 60s. Memorial Day weekend is expected to be dry with high temperatures in the 70s.
