Talk about public health advice not passing the smell test, says the New York Post on Wednesday.
A woman refused to wear a mask at a Panera Bread in California. Her reasoning? She claimed they’re useless to stop the spread of COVID-19 since people can still smell farts through pants.
The video has since gone viral has since gone viral across social media (Warning: The video contains strong language that could be offensive to some people.)
The footage was taken Monday by someone in line behind the woman at a Panera Bread in Chico. It shows a woman that obviously had an agenda. It is almost apparent that she wanted to see the employees’ reactions to her not wearing a face covering.
Panera is one of many national retailers/restaurants that now requires that all customers wear a mask at all times in its bakery-cafes nationwide, except when eating or drinking while seated. This requirement took effect July 15.
When the woman came in without a mask, staffers gave her one to comply with the new policy. But she refused to wear it. She is seen holding her cellphone up, appearing to try to film while hiding her face. A man standing behind her rebukes her for not wearing the mask — which she’s holding in the same hand.
“Wow, you’re sure brave,” the man behind her, identified as William See, tells the woman. “You’re sure a tough one, aren’t you?”
On the video, she then asks a Panera employee “Can we get this lady out of here please,” prompting the worker to say that she has just called security.
“So you’re not going to serve me because I’m not wearing a mask?” the woman asks a few times. “No, they’re not going to serve you because you’re not wearing a mask, that’s exactly right,” See replies.
The woman stands her ground and continues to hold up her cellphone. See says “Just put on a mask, don’t be such a moron.” He then calls her selfish and says she is putting them all at risk -- with a few other words thrown in.
The man’s outburst causes the maskless woman to turn around and ask to “stop it” before she intentionally blows air in his direction.
Another male voice can be heard cursing out the woman as she walks away. Before she exits the store, she stops briefly and says “Do you think that mask is going to protect you?” the woman says. “You fart out your ---; you can smell it out of your ---.”
According to the New York Post, social media sleuths are trying to identify the woman early Wednesday after some Twitter users asked others to retweet the footage until her identity is revealed.
“Karen is ranting in Panera that masks won’t stop the virus because pants can’t stop farts,” tweets ShawDaddy. “We have a scholar on our hands, folks.”
