MINNEAPOLIS - Competition kicked off for the International Swimming League this past Friday at the Duna Arena in Budapest, Hungary, with three Gopher alumni scoring over the four-day, two-match opening weekend. The Cali Condors, Energy Standard Paris, LA Current and NY Breakers all squared off in Match 1, as Tevyn Waddell made the biggest impact of the three competing Gophers, tallying 6.5 points through five events. The Mitchell, S.D. native's most impressive finish came in the form of a fifth place finish in the 200-meter backstroke, accompanying her relay team's sixth place finish in the 4x100m medley relay.
Bowen Becker made good use of his only race of the meet as well, helping his 4x100m freestyle relay team to a sixth place finish with a relay split of 48.03 seconds. His Cali Condors sit tied for first in the ISL standings after winning their first match of the season.
Lindsey Kozelsky was the only Gopher to compete in Match 2 and she made her presence known quickly. Her relay team's second place finish in the 4x100m medley relay served as her best finish of the meet. By touching fourth in the 100m breaststroke and sixth in the 50m breast, Kozelsky finished the weekend with a grand point total of 11.5, the highest among any Gopher so far this season.
"I'm just honored to have this opportunity to race right now," said Kozelsky. "The atmosphere [here] is nothing like 'normal' swimming meets. There's a DJ and the lights and fog really create an incredible atmosphere to get jacked to swim fast. It's like a dance party with the fastest swimmers in the world."
Next weekend will once again feature all five former Gopher athletes, with Kierra Smith's LA Current starting things off in Match 3 on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 5:00 a.m. CDT.
