MARSHALL — Both the Marshall and Wabasso amateur baseball teams entered Wednesday’s matchup looking to snap recent losing skids. Thanks to a strong start offensively and a dominant outing by Doug Mead, Marshall got back into the winner’s column with a 11-1 victory in seven innings at Legion Field.

Marshall took advantage early on offense, with Mead and Alex Thompson getting aboard on a walk before Mason Penske connected on a two-run double. After Logan Tomasek lined a single, Connor Neubeck brought in another run on a fielder’s choice to make it 3-0. Marshall then loaded the bases with a Zach Olsen walk and a Charlie Jacobson single before Jordan Mernaugh and Peyton Grant plated a pair of runs on a walk and a fielder’s choice to push their lead to 5-0 after one.

Wabasso, meanwhile, wasn’t able to get anything going at the plate in the first few frames, as Marshall starter Doug Mead held them without a hit and only allowed one baserunner during that stretch. Wabasso wouldn’t go down without a fight, though, as Adryen Tietz led off the fourth with a walk and a stolen base before coming around to score on a wild pitch. Wabasso then loaded the bases with two outs on back-to-back singles by Kyle Lechner and Cole Frericks and a walk by Caleb Kemp, but Marshall was able to escape the jam and prevent further damage.

Marshall had an answer in its next couple of at-bats, however. After Thompson led off the bottom half of the fourth with a walk, Penske and Tomasek connected on back-to-back singles to plate a run before Neubeck reached on an error to make it 7-1. Then in the fifth, Marshall added three more runs, highlighted by an RBI single by Thompson and another two-run double by Penske to push its advantage to 10-1.

Marshall then loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh before Greenwood connected on an RBI single to bring it to the 11-1 final.

Penske led Marshall with four hits and four RBI while Tomasek and Grant each added two hits and an RBI and Jacobson had two hits.

Mead earned the victory on the mound, going seven innings while allowing just two hits and struck out one.

Lechner and Cole Frericks led Wabasso with a hit each. Lechner also took the loss on the mound, going four innings while allowing seven runs on seven hits and struck out four.
