A traffic stop in Hoover Saturday afternoon turned up a possible homemade explosive device.
Hoover officers pulled over a pickup truck about 3:30 p.m. on U.S. 31 and the truck pulled into the parking lot of the Econo Lodge, said Officer Brian Hale.
During the course of the stop, police discovered what appeared to a hand grenade. The department’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal team responded to the motel to render the device safe.
Shortly after 4:30 p.m., there was a large scene roped off with crime scene tape and the bomb squad’s truck.
The grenade was transported away from the scene and the investigation is continuing.
The pickup driver was arrested, and possible warrants will be obtained for possession of an explosive device. Authorities haven’t yet released the driver’s intention in possessing the grenade.
