While parts of New Jersey have already picked up more than a foot of snow, the heaviest bands have moved away from our area Saturday and the strong coastal storm is expected to wind down this afternoon somewhat earlier than originally expected.

Light to moderate snow is still falling before noon Saturday and will continue for a few more hours, though the storm is gradually losing intensity, the National Weather Service said.

Snow will wind down from southwest to northeast beginning around noon in Salem County and by 2 to 3 p.m. in north and Central Jersey, National Weather Service meteorologist Jonathan O’Brien told NJ Advance Media Saturday morning.

O’Brien cautioned, though, that even when the snow stops, gusty winds as high as 50 mph will continue to make it hazardous to travel. New Jersey remains under a state of emergency and Gov. Phil Murphy has urged residents to stay home.

N.J. weather: Blizzard conditions, heavy snow from winter storm Saturday, today

Heavy snow and blizzard conditions are expected throughout the day Saturday as a winter storm continues to slam New Jersey with snowfall totals up to 18 inches and winds gusting up to 50 mph.

“As we go through the late afternoon and evening, we still do expect very windy conditions, so there will be a lot of blowing and drifting snow and you probably will still have areas of reduced visibility and areas where snow is being blown back over the roadways,” O’Brien said. “One of the key takeaways with the ending portion of the storm is just because the snow has stopped falling doesn’t necessarily mean that the impacts have ended. Near the coast it may be tough to tell when the snow has stopped because there’s going to be so much blowing snow.”

As of 11 a.m., NJ Advance Media’s power outage tracker is showing around 1,100 outages, far less than officials feared ahead of the storm. The majority of those are JCP&L customers in Toms River and Berkeley Township in Ocean County, which is seeing some of the strongest winds and higher snowfall totals. The peak in outages was about 1,500 customers overnight.

AccuWeather meteorologist Brandon Buckingham said he expects snow will end from west to east starting between 2 and 3 p.m. along the Delaware River in western New Jersey and in approximately the 4 to 5 p.m. window along the Jersey Shore.

“In the last hour or two of that snowfall, it should really begin to taper down to just some flurries, but accounting for every flake (snow will end around 5 p.m.),” Buckingham said.

N.J. weather: Dangerous wind chills can cause frostbite in minutes during major snowstorms

Dangerous wind chills can cause frostbite on exposed skin in just minutes. Here's how fast that can happen, according to the National Weather Service.

Wind chill values will plunge below zero Saturday night into Sunday morning as temperatures dip into the single digits, forecasters say.

Sunday will be dry and sunny, but cold, with highs only in the 20s and winds chill values below zero.
