A driver apparently shot himself after Lakewood police officers attempted to pull him over on U.S. 6 Sunday afternoon, according to police.

The man’s condition was not known, spokesman John Romero said Sunday. The shooting happened at about 3:10 p.m. on eastbound U.S. 6 just past the intersection with Wadsworth Boulevard, Romero said.

Lakewood police officers attempted a traffic stop, but the driver “wouldn’t pull over,” Romero said. The officers followed the driver at a slow speed until he eventually stopped the vehicle. As officers got out of their cars and approached the man’s vehicle, the man fired a gun and shot himself, Romero said.

Two lanes of eastbound U.S. 6 remained closed Sunday evening to allow police to investigate the shooting, Romero said. He did not immediately know why officers initiated the traffic stop, the identity of the driver or whether the driver was wanted on any warrants.

Lakewood police officers did not fire their weapons, Romero said. The man was alone in the car during the incident.
