PennDOT, Warren County School District, and local law enforcement are working together to make school bus stops safer.
Operation Safe Stop is a collaborative program that is intended to help educate the motoring public that passing a stopped school bus when children are loading or unloading is both dangerous and illegal, Youngsville Borough Police Chief Todd Mineweaser said. “Law enforcement agencies, school transportation providers, pupil transportation associations, and PennDOT have combined their efforts to raise public awareness about the potential consequences of these traffic violations and reduce the occurrence of illegal school bus passes.”
Operation Safe Stop has been going on for 25 years. This year, it will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 19.
“On this day, we hope all school districts will participate by having their drivers document any illegal passes occurring on their routes during the day,” according to an Operation Safe Stop release.
There are cameras on all of the buses that transport Warren County School District students.
Participating law enforcement, like Youngsville Borough Police, can:
¯ assign officers to ride along on the buses, collecting information and providing safety information to the children along the way;
¯ watch and issue citations on routes and stops identified by the district as trouble areas; and
¯ follow the buses and watch the problem areas from marked police vehicles.
Mineweaser said the department is active in school bus monitoring on a regular basis and is looking forward to doing its part for the state-wide effort.
