Formula One's popularity has boomed around the world over the past several years, thanks to a robust social media presence and an omnipresent Netflix series.

However, its drivers' newfound fame has come with a dark side.

On Sunday, driver Charles Leclerc asked fans to refrain from showing up at his home unannounced, expressing frustration with a sudden influx of unsolicited visitors.

“For the past few months my home address has somehow become public, leading to people gathering beneath my apartment, ringing my bell and asking for pictures and autographs,” Leclerc said on his Instagram story. “While I’m always happy to be there for you and truly appreciate your support, please respect my privacy and refrain from coming to my house.”

As noted by The New York Times, Leclerc was robbed in Viareggio, Italy last year by two assailants who initiated a conversation with him by asking for a selfie. Four people were recently arrested in the case.

Leclerc, 25, is one of Formula One's most popular drivers. The Monaco native has five wins and 18 pole positions to his name in his six-year career, and finished second in the drivers' championship standings a year ago.
