LOS ANGELES — Lance McCullers Jr. is scheduled to be reinstated from the injured list in time to make a start on Wednesday against the Rangers at Minute Maid Park, the Astros announced on Sunday.

McCullers was placed on the injured list Sept. 6 with what the team described as neck nerve irritation. The righthander received an anti-inflammatory injection this week that, according to manager Dusty Baker, alleviated “95 percent” of McCullers’ discomfort.

McCullers faced just five hitters and threw 18 pitches during his last start against the Angels. Afterward, both McCullers and Baker said the righthander was suffering from “dead arm phase,” something McCullers said was common for pitchers who’ve undergone Tommy John surgery.

McCullers had the surgery in Nov. 2018 and did not pitch during the 2019 season. He has a 5.79 ERA in 37 ⅓ innings this season.
