Folks, football is finally here. Time to trawl the waiver wire, breathlessly await those Week 1 inactives, and seek out every sleeper possible.
Here's a look at some guys I like, and some guys I don't like, in this week's season-opening matchups, starting with Eagles vs. Washington at 1 P.M.
Eagles to start
WR DeSean Jackson
Here's something: DeSean Jackson is very good at Week 1. Over his last four Week 1 starts, Jackson is averaging 5.5 catches, 110.2 yards, and 1 touchdown, a line that any fantasy player would be happy with from a 33-year-old deep threat. Jackson will be Wentz's most skilled weapon at WR this week, by far, and should get plenty of looks.
D/ST Eagles DST
Washington quarterback Dwayne Haskins threw seven INTs and fumbled six times - losing two - last year, and was sacked 29 times, in just nine games. The second-year QB should eventually make strides this season, but I'd imagine those changes will take some time after a weird and shortened offseason. The Eagles' strong and fresh D-line should eat early in the year against this young QB.
RB Boston Scott
Scott's last regular-season game was unbelievable: 54 rush yards, three touchdowns, four catches, and 84 receiving yards. With Miles Sanders out for Week 1, Scott will be the Eagles' top rushing threat, and because he's a weapon on the ground and in the pass game - 24 catches for 204 yards in his last four games last season - he could have a big start to 2020.
Eagles to sit
TE Dallas Goedert
It's easy to get excited about Goedert's potential this season, to the point where I think people are valuing him as a player with eventual TE1 potential. But I'd rather wait and see how the Eagles' offense looks after a few weeks before gambling on the Birds running a glut of two-tight end sets, especially with Jalen Reagor suddenly healthy this week.
WR Jalen Reagor
Speaking of Reagor... I think the kid is going to be excellent, and could prove to be a steal this season, but he's still a rookie playing in his first game, and he's coming off a preseason injury to boot. He's rostered on just 25% of NFL Fantasy teams for a reason. The Eagles will throw plenty on Sunday with Sanders out, but I'd still be careful using Reagor unless you're truly desperate for a wideout/flex option.
Other players to start
TE Hayden Hurst, Falcons
Austin Hooper was No. 12 in the league in red zone targets last season, second among tight ends behind only Travis Kelce, and Hurst should slide right into that role in Week 1 against the Seahawks - yes, even with the addition of Jamal Adams. After obvious growth in Baltimore from Year 1 to Year 2, Hurst is primed for a breakout year, and I think it starts strong in Week 1.
QB Philip Rivers, Colts
You can bet Frank Reich has something special up his sleeve for Rivers' first week in Indianapolis, going against probably the worst team in the league. The Jaguars' pass rush is decimated - goodbye, Yannick Ngakoue - and the Colts' offensive line is excellent. Rivers should thrive when the matchup is this optimal.
Other player to sit
WR Christian Kirk, Cardinals
The 49ers' defense smothered opponents last season, allowing 300 passing yards just twice over 16 games. They held Arizona QB Kyler Murray to 335 total passing yards in the teams' two meetings. Murray is a year older and wiser, and suddenly has a Top 3 wide receiver on his team in DeAndre Hopkins, but I'm not sure we'll see great production trickle down to WR2 in this matchup.
This week's sleeper
RB Antonio Gibson, Washington
Sorry, Birds fans. The Eagles were one of the better fantasy defenses against running backs last year - eighth in the legaue, ahead of teams like the Ravens and Broncos - but Gibson is a true unknown. Washington is so confident in the rookie, it released Adrian friggin' Peterson. And as he'll be getting RB1 looks in his first career game, I'm sure Ron Rivera & Co. have some plans to help him out.
