MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – For the second consecutive season, WKU Football will start its Conference USA season 1-0 as the Hilltoppers defeated the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders 20-17 in their conference opener at Floyd Stadium.
Immediately following kickoff, WKU's DeAngelo Malone recorded a quarterback sack for a loss of seven yards. The Hilltopper defense went on to force numerous Middle Tennessee 3 & outs in the first quarter. With over four minutes remaining in the frame, Malone returned to his play-making ways, blocking a field goal and keeping the first quarter of the game scoreless.
Within the first minute of the second quarter, transfer kicker Brayden Narveson kicked a 47-yard field goal through the uprights to put WKU on the scoreboard first. Middle Tennessee responded with a 75-yard, 14-play drive resulting in a touchdown.
A WKU fumble gave the Blue Raiders the ball back on their own 31-yard line and Middle Tennessee used the miscue to kick a field goal and extend its lead to 10-3.
With the first half winding down, WKU drove down the field in just over two and a half minutes. Tyrrell Pigrome capped off the drive with a 6-yard pass to wide receiver Xavier Lane in the end zone. Narveson finished it off with an extra point kick to tie the game 10-10 entering the break.
The first 10 minutes of third quarter remained tied until WKU became stranded on a fourth down at the Blue Raider 35-yard line. Narveson continued his perfect streak of field goals, kicking a 53-yarder to give WKU the lead. It was the third-longest completed field goal in program history, besting Cory Munson's field goal make in the 2019 First Responder Bowl by one yard.
With a three-point lead headed into the final quarter, WKU was unable to score on its first drive. The Hilltopper defense forced a quick 3 & out and the offense was able to capitalize on field position. A 68-yard, 13-play drive by WKU resulted in an 11-yard touchdown pass from Pigrome to Joshua Simon to push the Hilltopper lead to 20-10 with six minutes remaining.
Middle Tennessee would go on to score another touchdown with two minutes left, but an unsuccessful onside kick attempt gave WKU the ability to run out the clock with a victory hand.
Pigrome finished the game completing 21 of 36 passes for a total of 188 yards and two touchdowns. He also led the squad in rushing with 55 yards. Lane recorded a career game with seven receptions, 73 receiving yards and one touchdown.
Linebacker Kyle Bailey led the defense with 10 tackles including five solo wrap-ups. Malone and Eli Brown each recorded a sack while Jeremy Darvin and Ricky Barber notched 0.5 sacks each.
WKU will return to The Hill for a homecoming game against Marshall on Saturday, October 10.
