SHAWANO, WI- The Shawano Hawks football team seems to understand the idea of taking advantage of the moment.
In two weeks, the Hawks have defeated a team that they have not defeated in 10 years and defeated another team that they have not defeated in 4 years. With their 44-27 win over New London on Friday, the Hawks start the season 2-0 for the first time in the Al Tomow coaching era. It was 2014 the last time the Hawks had this kind of fast start.
The Hawks excelled in offense, defense and special teams Friday on Senior Night.
Shawano rode the passing arm and running legs of Senior quarterback Gage Timm to victory. Timm was 11 of 20 with 145 passing yards and two passing touchdowns along with 78 rushing yards on 12 carries, two of which ended up in the endzone.
The special teams gave the Hawks the spark they needed as Elliot Lowney returned the opening kickoff over 85 yards for the touchdown. The Hawks special teams got another spark to start the second half as they recovered an onside kick.
Kaleb Lowney was once again a workhorse with 24 carries for 110 yards and two scores. Elliot Lowney had a big night with two receiving touchdowns and had 7 catches for 113 yards.
New London had a strong day through the air. Quarterback Ben Noffke was 19 of 31 with 284 yards passing and 3 touchdowns. Jackson Fields caught two short touchdown passes and Kyle Wisniewski caught two touchdown passes. The Bulldogs were held to under 70 yards rushing as a team.
Shawano’s grabbed the 6-0 lead on the kick return by Lowney but missed the extra point. The Hawks held that lead until the late in the first quarter when they fumbled the ball and New London answered with a 36-yard touchdown pass from Noffke to Wisniewski on one play. The Bulldogs also missed the extra point and the game was tied 6-6.
In the second quarter, Shawano took the lead on a pass to Elliot Lowney, and the Bulldogs answered with a touchdown of their own on the next drive to tie the game at 13. Shawano led 20-13 at the half.
In the second half, Shawano took a bigger lead. After recovering the onside kick, Gage Timm ran for a 46 yard touchdown on the very next play. The Bulldogs were never able to get any closer but did close out the game on a touchdown pass from Nofkee to Wisniewski as time expired.
Shawano is 2-0 and takes on the 2-0 Xavier Hawks next week in Appleton. New London drops to 0-2.
