It was supposed to be a medical office building. Then it became a “truck stop” until a judge intervened and forced the removal of 50 tractor trailers.
So what will neighbors of 530 Milford St. have to look forward to at that vacant spot? A zoning hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 1., where developer Abe Atiyeh was scheduled to present plans for 84 apartments.
But Atiyeh said Wednesday, Nov. 25, that hearing will be postponed for at least a few months.
He said he’s “negotiating” with the township over what to put there.
It’s in an area zoned for heavy industrial development, although there are many residences nearby. Atiyeh got permission to put in an assisted living facility across the street, according to Palmer Township Supervisor Chairman Dave Colver.
Atiyeh needs special permission to put apartments in that zoning district. A legal ad says he also needs permission to go four stories high and for a parking lot that’s under the zoning requirement.
He said he might come up with an industrial use he can build by right so he won’t need zoning approval. He’s not sure what he’ll propose at this point.
“Right now we’re doing research,” he said.
He got permission in 2008 to build a medical office building but never followed through.
The lot known as Milford Plaza once served as a place for excess inventory for a nearby car dealership.
Atiyeh wound up leasing the place to Basikh Properties, which used it to store tractor trailers. The township argued Atiyeh didn’t have zoning permission for the trucks, and Northampton County Judge Craig Dally ordered their removal in August.
Basikh Properties attorney Gary Asteak said the trucks are gone. He said Basikh thought the truck stop was legal.
“My clients moved the trucks out,” Asteak said. “They found another location. I think they simply walked away from the deal. The entire relationship (with Atiyeh) was toxic.”
