Ned Gerard / Hearst Connecticut MediaStop & Shop will be among the first pharmacies in the nation to provide COVID-19 vaccinations, once a vaccine is authorized or approved for use in the United States, the grocery chain announced Monday.
The vaccines, which will be free to customers, will be offered at more than 250 pharmacy locations across the northeast through the chain’s partnership with the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.
“We’re proud to do our part in the fight against COVID-19 by joining this critical effort led by HHS — and by making the vaccines accessible for our customers as soon as safe and effective options become available,” Katie Thornell, director of pharmacy at Stop & Shop, said in a statement. “This move to become an early provider is part of our commitment to be a trusted health resource within our communities.”
When the coronavirus vaccine is available, Stop & Shop said, customers will be expected to wear face coverings when they show up for their vaccination. Pharmacists will be wearing masks, gloves and face shields. The immunization area will have “strict disinfecting and sanitization measures” between each patient, Shop & Shop said.
The grocery chain already offers flu shots at all of its pharmacy locations.
