While the light snow in New Jersey on Tuesday won’t be remotely as intense as on Monday when parts of the state received 2 feet or more, snow will continue to fall for several more hours before the 3-day nor’easter completely exits Garden State.
Forecasters say another 1 to 3 inches could drop on Tuesday by the time the final flurries of the long-duration winter storm.
The National Weather Service says it expects precipitation to end from west to east, starting in Sussex County around 6 p.m. before it all wraps up around 10 p.m. along the Jersey Shore.
Light snow and wind gusts that reach up to 35 mph will again give New Jersey a “wintry feel,” the weather service said in its morning forecast discussion. Slippery roads will be a concern during the evening commute and wind gusts of up to 35 mph could cause blowing snow.
Eventually, the low pressure system that has been here since Sunday will push out to sea and drier air will filter in from the northwest, according to the weather service.
The highest snow total in New Jersey as of late Monday was Sparta with 30.3 inches though overnight accumulations and whatever falls Tuesday will push that total higher. Multiple towns in Bergen, Essex, Morris, Passaic, Sussex and Warren also recorded more than 20 inches of snow.
New Jersey remains under a state of emergency. New Jersey Transit bus and train service will resume at 9 a.m. on a staggered schedule. Mail service remains suspended in North Jersey. Hundreds of school districts are either closed or have shifted to remote instruction for the day.
