The Mets received good news on Sunday. Right-hander Jacob deGrom will start against the Rockies on Tuesday at Citi Field, according to Mets manager Luis Rojas.
deGrom missed two Major League starts because of right side tightness, however he struck out eight of the 10 batters he faced in Low-A St. Lucie in his rehab assignment on Thursday. It also helped that deGrom threw a bullpen session on Sunday in Miami without any problems.
“Everything really looked good,” Rojas said. “We are still going to monitor the rest of today and tomorrow, but he is on track [to pitch on Tuesday]."
Before the injury, deGrom was New York’s best pitcher this season, going 3-2 with a 0.68 ERA. He also leads the team in Wins Above Replacement (2.2).
Pillar has surgery
Outfielder Kevin Pillar had nasal surgery on Friday, according to Rojas. The team believes Pillar will be able to start light baseball activities 10-to-14 days after the surgery.
“It’s see how he keeps progressing post surgery and see what he is able to do,” Rojas said.
Pillar suffered multiple nasal fractures on Monday, after he was hit by a pitch thrown by Braves right-hander Jacob Webb at Truist Park
Other injury news
• José Peraza was not in the starting lineup for the second game in a row on Sunday, because of a right leg contusion, but he is available to pinch-hit against the Marlins. Peraza hurt his leg in the top of the fourth inning on Friday after he was hit by a pitch from Marlins right-hander Zach Pop.
• Dellin Betances (right shoulder) arrived at loanDepot park on Sunday morning and threw a bullpen session. According to Rojas, Betances has done a lot of work from a treatment and strength standpoint.
• J.D. Davis was not in Sunday’s starting lineup for Triple-A Syracuse because of a stiff neck. He is expected to spend a few more days with Syracuse before he returns to the Major Leagues. He is currently on the IL because of a bruised left hand.
• Right-hander Noah Syndergaard (Tommy John surgery) is expected to pitch in a rehab assignment for Low-A St. Lucie sometime this week.
