HANOVERTON — Jonathan Bertovich scored 28 points, including consecutive baskets to open the fourth quarter to blow the game open, as unbeaten Heartland Christian topped United, 80-58, Tuesday.

The Lions improve to 3-0, while the Eagles drop to 0-1.

With the Lions leading by seven points, Bertovich opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer and then coverted a steal into a layup to boost the advantage to 66-54.

Heartland uppped the lead to 20 poins at 76-56.

Heartland led 59-48 in the third quarter on a Bertovich three-pointer and settled for a 61-54 lead heading into the final period.

Bertovich also had six assists, nine steals and five rebounds. Stephen Barnes added 16 points, three assists and six boards.

Steffen Jarrett had 23 points for the Eagles. Grant Knight added 12 points.

United won the jayvee game, 41-37. Drew Gault had 13 points and three assists for the Lions.

Heartland hosts Leetonia on Friday.

CALCUTTA — A huge third quarter pushed Beaver Local’s boys basketball team past Columbiana 75-52 on Tuesday.

Beaver Local hit 12 three-pointers in the win and outscored the Clippers 25-12 in the third quarter.

Beaver Local travels to rival East Liverpool on Friday night.

Sky Pappas led the winners with 16 points. Logan Blissenbach added 13 points, while Ethan Agnew had 12 points.

Nick Million had 13 points for the Clippers. Maddox Brown added seven rebounds.

Beaver Local won the jayvee portion 47-40 with Michael McKenzie scoring 13 points with six rebounds. Dante Sorge added nine points.

Columbiana hosts Sandy Valley on Saturday.

COLUMBIANA — Anthony Cusick and Jack Yerkey had 14 points each but Crestview ended up on the short end of a 58-53 loss to Lowellville on Tuesday.

Kirkland Miller added 12 points for the Rebel, 0-1.

Yerkey also had 10 boards. James Best had six assists.

The Rebels are 0-1.

Lowellville won the jayvee game, 36-31. Hancox had 12 points for the Rebels.

South Range was led by Dylan Turvey’s 15 points.

Branden Clint had 37 points for Southeast.

South Range won the jayvee game, 63-50.

KINSMAN — The Badger Braves made quick work of East Palestine with a 60-27 win over the Bulldogs on Tuesday.

East Palestine falls to 0-1 and will be at Maplewood on Friday.

East Liverpool 86, Edison 14

RICHMOND — East Liverpool jumped all over Edison with an 86-14 win on Tuesday in the season opener for both schools.

The Potters led 23-4 after the first and 52-9 at half. The game was played under a running clock in the second half due to the new Ohio High School Athletic Association rule which requires a running clock when the score margin hits 35 points in the second half.

The game ended at around 8 p.m.

Cole Dailey had 18 points for the Potters, while Devin Toothman added 16 points. Zavea Green chipped in 10 points.

East Liverpool hosts rival Beaver Local on Friday.

The Potters won the two quarter jayvee game, 32-7. Cohen Pease had 20 points for the Potters.
