Why Saka?
Saka was one of England’s best players in the 1-0 win over the Czech Republic at Wembley and was handed UEFA’s man of the match award.
The Arsenal teenager was an attacking threat throughout and was responsible for 41.6 per cent of all dribbles in the match — completing at least twice as many (5) as the next closest player (Marcus Rashford, with 2).
After the game Southgate praised Saka for delivering “a real standout performance”.
“We played him in the position we did, partly because of his work off the ball is so good,” he said. “His angles of approach are good. I know his club have worked a lot with him on that.
“And it speaks volumes that his club have trusted him for the number of games they have.”
What about the rest of the team?
It is possible that Southgate will revert to a back five for the match against Germany.
That tactical switch would mean it is unlikely that either Mason Mount, Jack Grealish or Phil Foden will start the match at Wembley.
Grealish, 25, was handed his first start of the tournament against the Czech Republic.
Mount, 22, started England’s opening two matches, against Croatia and Scotland respectively, but was forced to sit out the win against the Czech Republic after coming into close contact with Chelsea team-mate Billy Gilmour, who later tested positive for COVID-19.
Foden, 21, featured in both of England's first two group games against Croatia and Scotland, but was not named in Southgate's 24-man squad against Czech Republic. Southgate later explained the decision was because of the yellow card Foden picked up in their match against Croatia. A second yellow would have made Foden ineligible to play against Germany.
Do England have a clean bill of health?
Yes. Mount and Ben Chilwell have both been training separately due to their contact with Gilmour.
But England have no fresh injury concerns ahead of the match against Germany.
