Holly Springs officer killed during traffic stop ID'd by GBI; suspect also dead - WSB Atlanta

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said a Holly Springs police officer and suspect were killed during a traffic stop Thursday morning.

The GBI said Joe Burson pulled the suspect over for speeding on Hickory Road early Thursday. During the traffic stop, Burson was dragged behind the suspect’s car until he died. The suspect was shot and killed by a responding officer.

Burson was just 25 years old. According to the police department, the Ball Ground, Georgia, native was sworn in in March 2020. This was his first job out of the academy. He leaves behind a wife.

The suspect was identified as 29-year-old Ansy Dolce of Cherokee County.

The area on Hickory Road, from New Light Road to Little Road, was closed for hours as the Cherokee County Sheriff’s office and the GBI investigated. They asked people to avoid the area.

Around 2 p.m. Thursday, Highway 92 was briefly shut down as Burson’s body was transported to a funeral home. Dozens of law enforcement vehicles joined the procession.

Channel 2′s Kristen Holloway spoke to a man who lives nearby and said he has relatives who work for the police department. He said he was told the traffic stop was over a stolen car.

“Him and I both almost broke down in tears because this man’s not going home to his family over a stolen vehicle come on. If you’re gonna do something like that. Take your punishment with your crime, don’t take somebody’s life,” Eddy Wilhoit said.

“This doesn’t happen here in Holly Springs,” Wilhoit said. “This stuff needs to stop.”

Investigators said Burson was a rookie in the department and this was his first job as a police officer.

Fellow officers said Burson would let kids sit in his car and turn the blue lights on, and loved community service.

Hickory Rd.  from New Light Rd. to Little Rd is closed for an active police investigation. That stretch of Hickory Road will likely remain closed throughout the morning. Please avoid that area if possible.
