Rockies’ German Marquez — brilliant again — making strong bid to start All-Star Game - The Denver Post

As far as auditions go, German Marquez killed it Saturday night at Petco Park.

The Rockies right-hander pitched seven scoreless innings and struck out nine in Colorado’s 3-0 shutout of San Diego.

Colorado, which won just its eighth road game in 42 tries, put together one of its best road performances of the season, outhitting the Padres 8-5 and snapping a nine-game losing streak at Petco.

There is a legitimate chance that Marquez will be named the starter for the National League for Tuesday night’s All-Star Game at Coors Field. NL manager Dave Roberts, of the Dodgers, will make the call, but Marquez is showing his best side at the right time. Over his last five starts, he’s 4-0 with a 0.75 ERA.

“I would like to be the starter, but it’s not my decision,” the right-hander said. “It would be an amazing thing.”

Manager Bud Black added: “It would be pretty cool. I would dig it if it happened.”

Black added that he would likely call Roberts, who is a close friend, on Sunday to discuss the matter. Black will serve as Roberts’ bench coach on Tuesday.

Mets ace Jacob deGrom would likely have been the NL starter, but he said Wednesday that he will not be attending the All-Star Game. Instead, he will spend time with his family and rest for the second half.

Marquez is a first-time all-star, and it would be a goosebump moment if he gets to throw the first pitch in front of a sellout crowd in Denver. But there is more than sentimentality at work here.

The right-hander has been one of the best pitches in baseball over the last seven weeks. Across his last nine starts (since May 21), Marquez is 6-2 with a 1.88 ERA. He has allowed one or fewer runs in eight of his nine starts over that span.

Asked if he’s currently pitching the best in his career, he said, “Yeah, I feel that way. I spent a lot of time working to fix my delivery. So I got that solved and I’m so happy about it.”

For the Rockies, runs on the road have been scarce. They entered the game batting .197 with runners in scoring position away from Coors Field. Worse, shortstop Trevor Story didn’t play because his scapula and the back of his shoulder are sore after he was hit by a pitch on Friday night. Also, infielders Brendan Rodgers and Ryan McMahon both have a stomach virus and were unable to play, leaving the Rockies short-handed.

But veteran right fielder Charlie Black delivered in the fifth with the bases loaded, pulling a one-out grounder through the right side to score Marquez (who singled) and Raimel Tapia, who had reached on a fielding error by first baseman Eric Hosmer. Tapia reached base four times on a hit, two walks and an error.

And emergency shortstop Chris Owings had two hits, including a double, and made a terrific, over-the-shoulder, diving catch in the sixth inning.

“This was a good win,” Black said. “German put the team on his back, in a lot of ways tonight. But the guys who started the game were energized and ready to play. You saw some good defense from us.”

Colorado added a bonus run in the seventh on C.J. Cron’s sacrifice fly to center to score Tapia.

On Sunday, with right-hander Jon Gray on the mound, Colorado will attempt to win back-to-back road games for the first time this season. Then the Rockies are off from Monday through Thursday for the all-star break.
