Responding to an incident in which at least four people were injured by gunfire at Ladd-Peebles Stadium while a high school football game was in progress Friday night, Mobile’s mayor said the “continuing trend of violence … must stop.”
“The continuing trend of violence in our community, especially among young people, must stop,” Mayor Sandy Stimpson said in a statement released late Saturday. “I am confident MPD will track down those responsible for last night’s shooting and hold them accountable for their unnecessary and senseless actions. Our thoughts and prayers are [with] those injured in this thoughtless act of violence as well as the families and students whose night was disrupted by it.”
As of Saturday evening, neither suspects nor victims had been named by police. The Mobile Police Department had, however, released a photo showing three people it described as “suspects of interest” and asked the public to help identify them. Anyone with information is asked to call 251-208-7211 or to submit a tip at mobilepd.org/crimetip.
Security precautions at the stadium have been heightened since a separate gametime shooting at the stadium a little over two years ago. At the time, those measures included assurances that security would monitor the field house, sidelines, entrance gate and concession stands at all times, and that students would have to show their ID to enter.
“We are utilizing all the resources of the Gulf Coast Technology Center, which is comprised of 42 federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, to ensure the security at future high school football games at Ladd-Peebles Stadium,” said Stimpson. “I have charged the Mobile Police Department and the officers of the GCTC with assessing current security protocols at Ladd and where they failed. They will also be looking into what immediate steps need to be taken to improve stadium security and the long term solutions needed to prevent individuals from bringing weapons into these kinds of events. We will remain in close contact with the Mobile County School System and Superintendent Chresal Threadgill throughout this process.”
The school system has not released any substantive statement on the incident, but did say Saturday that “Our thoughts are with the victims of Friday night’s shooting. This is something that should never happen at a high school football game. We are investigating along with the Mobile Police Department and will make whatever changes are necessary to our safety protocols.”
In May the Mobile County Board of School Commissioners approved a plan to build new stadiums at five schools, possibly leaving Murphy as the only high school using Ladd-Peebles.
