BRIDGEPORT, W.V. - The Drexel golf team had a solid opening day at the Mountaineer Invitational hosted by West Virginia. After day one, the Dragons find themselves in fourth place overall in the 12 team field which included teams from the Big Ten, the Big 12 and the Atlantic Coast Conference, among others. The teams were scheduled to play 36 holes on Monday at the Pete Dye Golf Club. However, due to darkness, Drexel still had two players that need to play one more hole to complete their round.
Drexel will start Tuesday's final round at nine-over par. The Dragons opened play with a 293, which is five-over par at the 7,308-yard, par 72 course. N.C. State leads the event at six-under par after firing and eight-under par in the afternoon round on Monday. Penn State sits two shots back. The Wolfpack and Nittany Lions were the only teams to break par. West Virginia, the host school, is at five-over par, just three shots ahead of the Dragons. Drexel has a double figures lead over the rest of the pack which includes George Mason, Xavier, Eastern Michigan, Maryland, Ohio, Bowling Green, Marshall and Eastern Kentucky.
Angelo Giantsopoulos leads the Dragons after the first day of competition. The senior is tied for eighth overall at even par. He shot a three-under 69 in the afternoon to pace DU. Dru Nicholas is at +3, while Jeffrey Cunningham is at +6. Nicholas and Jeffrey Cunningham each shot two-under par 70s in the morning and sat in the top five after round one. Nicholas was six-under par in a six hole stretch as the sophomore had four birdies in a row, a par and an eagle. Cunningham had a team-high five birdies in the opening 18. Tafadzwa Nyamukondiwa, playing in his first tournament in a Drexel uniform, had a strong final round. The junior is at one-under par with one hole to play and five-over par in the tournament.
The teams will tee off at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday and play 18 holes.
