An almost hot start to the new month as an upper ridge will keep the state mostly dry with ample sunshine today and tomorrow. Highs will remain in the mid to upper 80s, above average for early October. Rain chances both days are generally less than 10%, meaning most places will remain dry.
FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: The sky will be mostly fair for the high school games tonight with temperatures falling through the 70s.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL FORECAST: JACKSONVILLE STATE AT KENNESAW STATE (2:00p CT kickoff at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw, GA): Mostly sunny and warm; kickoff temperature near 86 degrees, falling into the upper 70s by the fourth quarter.
OLE MISS AT ALABAMA (2:30p CT kickoff at Bryant-Denny Stadium): Partly to mostly sunny and warm; temperatures falling from near 86 at kickoff, to near 80 by the final whistle.
TROY AT SOUTH CAROLINA (2:30p CT kickoff at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia SC): The weather will be warm and dry with a good supply of sunshine. About 88 degrees at kickoff, near 80 by the final whistle.
SAMFORD AT MERCER (5:00p CT kickoff in Macon, GA): A mostly clear sky during the game; temperatures will fall from 86 at kickoff into the upper 70s by the fourth quarter.
LIBERTY AT UAB (6:00p CT kickoff at Protective Stadium): Mostly fair; kickoff temperature near 78 degrees, falling into the low 70s by the end of the game.
AUBURN AT LSU (8:00p CT kickoff at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge): A passing shower or storm is possible during the first half, otherwise mostly fair with temperatures falling from around 80 at kickoff, into the mid-70s by the fourth quarter.
SHOWERS RETURN SUNDAY: Moisture levels rise Sunday, and we will bring in a chance of showers and thunderstorms back to the forecast during the day. Expect more clouds than sun and highs will struggle to climb out of the 70s for many locations due to the greater coverage of clouds and rain.
RACE WEEKEND: The weather will be warm and dry in Talladega today and tomorrow with highs in the 80s. Then, on Sunday, the sky will be mostly cloudy with a few passing showers likely. It won’t rain all day, but a delay is very possible during the YellaWood 500. The high Sunday will be in the upper 70s.
NEXT WEEK: An upper trough sets up over the state next week, and that means our weather will be unsettled for much of next week. Each day will feature a more clouds than sun with scattered to perhaps numerous showers and storms on a daily basis. Highs next week will range from the upper 70s to lower 80s. By the end of the week, we should see drier air return to the state.
HURRICANE SAM: The center of Hurricane Sam was located near latitude 28.4 North, longitude 61.8 West. Sam is moving toward the north near 21 mph. A turn toward the north-northeast, at a slightly slower forward speed, is expected by tonight, followed by a northeastward motion Saturday night through Monday. On the forecast track, the center of Sam will pass well to the east of Bermuda tonight.
Maximum sustained winds remain near 150 mph with higher gusts. Sam is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Although fluctuations in intensity are still possible today, weakening is forecast during the next couple of days. However, Sam is expected to remain a major hurricane through at least Saturday night. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 205 miles. The estimated minimum central pressure is 936 mb (27.64 inches).
TROPICAL STORM VICTOR: The center of Tropical Storm Victor was located near latitude 11.5 North, longitude 33.5 West. Victor is moving toward the west-northwest near 15 mph. The tropical storm is forecast to continue moving west-northwestward at a slightly slower forward speed today. A turn toward the northwest is anticipated over the weekend, and that motion will likely continue into early next week.
Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 65 mph with higher gusts. Little change in strength is expected today. Over the weekend, Victor is forecast to slowly weaken. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 997 mb (29.44 inches).
