Hello Huskies!
Huskie Nation, we are in non-stop "go" mode this spring here at NIU Athletics. After living in a mostly virtual world for the past two years, it has been energizing to be out and about, to invite people back to campus, to have in-person meetings, and most of all, to be able to hold events like last Saturday's Spring Showcase and – coming in June, the Huskie Summer Circuit!
For those of you who were able to attend the Spring Showcase, you saw a deep, talented football team that has me, Coach Hammock and the players themselves excited about the 2022 season. I have never seen a team bring so much "juice" – as they say – to spring practices. In addition to the competitive intensity, there was significant development both individually and as an offense and defense.
You all know how exciting this very young team was to watch a year ago when they made history by winning the Mid-American Conference Championship Game one year after going winless, winning seven one-possession games along the way. Well, watch out in 2022! Under this coaching staff, with the leaders that are in place on both sides of the ball, the talent, experience, depth and addition of a stellar recruiting class – I cannot wait until preseason camp in August, not to mention the season opener on September 3!
If you haven't renewed or purchased your new season tickets for 2022 yet, now is the time! The 2022 Huskie Athletic Fund membership guide is hitting mailboxes this week. Note that we have LOWERED prices for premium seat licenses in several areas, including benchback, Sky Club and Sky Box seats, and have made changes to the way that premium seat licenses are counted toward your Huskie Athletic Fund benefits. Read more about these changes and get information on season tickets and premium areas for basketball and volleyball, football parking and more. Renewals are available online 24 hours a day, seven days a week (click here) or call 815-753-7225 for both tickets and Huskie Athletic Fund information. As always, thank you for your support! Season ticket members and Huskie Athletic Fund donors are absolutely vital to our continued success!
There also has been significant news on the facilities front this spring for NIU Athletics. Earlier this month, we opened the Nelson Tennis Center at Chick Evans Field House, a true first-class home for our men's and women's tennis programs. This summer, turf projects at two facilities will significantly impact student-athletes in our men's and women's soccer and baseball programs. Replacing the natural grass infield at Ralph McKinzie Field is the first step in the Walt and Janice Owens Park project, while new turf at the NIU Soccer/Track & Field Complex ensures that our soccer student-athletes have a safe and quality playing surface.
On the heels of that announcement came news of our next project, the 1899 Club at Huskie Stadium. This new addition to the North End Zone will enhance our academic support space and enable us to provide a full training table for Huskie student-athletes. In addition, the area will be converted into a premium area on NIU football home game days. In order to get the ball rolling and support the 1899 Club, we are making commemorative 2021 MAC Championship rings available to Huskie fans, alumni and donors for a limited time with current HAF donors receiving a 10% discount as a special benefit. The purchase of a ring is a great remembrance of the Huskies' history-making championship, and with the majority of the $2,000 donation going to support the 1899 Club, it will also affect future NIU student-athletes for years to come. Look for renderings of this exciting addition to NIU's athletics footprint soon!
It's hard to fathom we are already wrapping up several of our spring sports seasons! While baseball, softball and outdoor track & field seasons continue into mid-May, men's tennis and women's golf will compete for MAC Championships this weekend (April 22-24), and women's tennis will wrap up its 2022 campaign with a pair of home matches Friday and Sunday. Men's tennis qualified for the MAC Championships for the fourth straight time, while women's golf will look to continue a run of success that has seen NIU finish no lower than third in the last four MAC Championships. Women's tennis won 15 dual matches this spring, the most by a Huskie team in 25 years, and the second winning campaign in the last three years for that program.
Next weekend (April 29-May 1), NIU will host the MAC Men's Golf Championships at White Eagle Golf Club in Naperville. Reece Nilsen, who won the Xavier Invitational this fall, has been the Huskies' top finisher in both of their spring tournaments to date and leads NIU with a scoring average of 73.8. Fans are invited to come out and support the Huskies, who have their sights set on improving on last year's runner-up finish!
Finally, mark your calendars for June 6-10 when NIU Athletics will once again host the Victor E. Bash on the NIU Athletics' YouTube Channel. All of your favorite events will be back, including the online Silent Auction and the Wine and Spirits Pull. Join the live chat during a special video presentation looking back at the 2012 NIU Football season that culminated in the Huskies' historic trip to the Orange Bowl. During the Victor E. Bash, we will broadcast the in-person Huskie Summer Circuit event live from Pollyanna Brewery in St. Charles. Join me and our head coaches there on Tuesday, June 7, or at Franchesco's in Rockford on Wednesday, June 8! Look for more information on these events soon in your inbox or online at NIUHuskies.com!
As you can see, the action never stops! Before you know it, we'll be welcoming the 2022-23 freshmen and beginning another season of Huskie Athletics.
To quote Coach Hammock, "you gotta love it!"
Go Huskies!
