MANCHESTER, Tenn. (AP) — A Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper and a man who fled from a traffic stop were wounded in an exchange of gunfire, officials said.
Both were hospitalized after the shooting late Thursday along Interstate 24 in Coffee County, which is about midway between Nashville and Chattanooga, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said in a statement. Their conditions haven’t been released.
According to a preliminary investigation, Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers stopped the westbound vehicle around 11 p.m. and at some point the vehicle drove off with the driver firing shots and hitting a patrol car, the bureau said.
Police put down spike strips and when the vehicle stopped, they say the driver got out and fired, hitting a trooper. Officers returned fire and hit the man, officials said. The trooper was taken to a Nashville hospital and the driver was taken to a Chattanooga hospital.
The bureau said agents were continuing to independently investigate the shooting. No further information was immediately released.
