Prosecutors say a 19-year-old man, who is a Latin King gang member, was found with a stolen gun with a loaded magazine during a traffic stop in Waukegan.
Kian Torres, 19, of Waukegan, was charged with three counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and one count of driving the wrong way on a one-way street.
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Emma Smoler said officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle after spotting it driving the wrong way down a street.
During the stop, which occurred in Waukegan on March 20, officers identified Torres as the driver and sole occupant of the car.
Officers were running Torres’ information and he began acting nervous, Smoler said.
Torres was asked to step out of the car and officers told the man they were going to pat him down.
Torres leaned away from the officer and the officer found a handgun in the man’s waistband, Smoler said.
The gun was a Glock 48 which had a fully loaded magazine in it. A second loaded magazine was found in Torres’ pocket.
Officers determined the gun was stolen from Indiana.
Torres initially said he had the gun for years but then said he has only had it for a matter of months, Smoler said.
Torres reportedly admitted to actively being a Latin King gang member for several years.
Smoler said the man, who is under the age of 21, does not have a Firearm Owner’s Identification card or concealed carry license.
Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak ordered Torres held on a $250,000 bond.
Torres, who remains held in the Lake County Jail, is scheduled to appear in court again on April 21 for a preliminary hearing.
