Suspect presumed to be armed flees traffic stop; vehicle found in St. George - St George News

ST. GEORGE — A man who fled a traffic stop was seen jumping from a vehicle and fleeing officers in the Dixie Downs area of St. George on Wednesday evening.

Sgt. Tyrell Bangerter with the St. George Police Department told St. George News the pursuit originated on Old Highway 91 by an officer with the Santa Clara-Ivins police department who attempted to stop a gray BMW at approximately 6:30 p.m.

The officer abandoned the pursuit for safety concerns, but a St. George policeman spotted the unoccupied vehicle on 1800 North and witnessed a man jumping a fence and fleeing, according to Bangerter.

“With some of the property abandoned they were able to identify the driver,” he said.

Police are searching for Collin Campbell, 44, who is presumed to be armed and dangerous, Bangerter noted.

Police K-9s and a Department of Public Safety helicopter assisted in searching for the suspect before the search was called off several hours later.

Campbell has a history of fleeing questioning by police. Three years ago, St. George News reported on Campbell fleeing an attempted stop by a Utah Highway Patrol trooper. He was arrested the next day in Virgin.

Bangerter said a knife and drugs also were found in the BMW during a search before it was towed from the scene.

“We are looking for Collin Campbell on a variety of felony charges,” Bangerter said. “He is likely armed. If people see him, don’t approach him. Just call dispatch or call 911.”
