WORCESTER, MA — Workers from Stop & Shops stores across the Worcester area made a massive food donation on Hunger Action Day last Thursday, delivering five tons of fresh produce at the Friendly House center.
The volunteers gathered Thursday morning at Friendly House, 36 Wall St., to pack 1,000 bags of produce, including items like tomatoes, carrots, cabbage, zucchini and yellow squash. The donation coincided with Hunger Action Day, but also comes as families across the region are struggling amid the coronavirus pandemic.

According to Feeding America, the nation's largest hunger relief organization, coronavirus-related economic crises could push the number of food insecure Americans to 54 million by the end of 2020. In Worcester County, about 68,460 were considered food insecure before the pandemic, according to Feeding America's "Map the Meal Gap" interactive study.
Along with a variety of other social services, Friendly House provides food assistance to children and families.
Patch has partnered with Feeding America to help raise awareness on behalf of the millions of Americans facing hunger. Feeding America, which supports 200 food banks across the country, estimates that in 2020, more than 54 million Americans will not have enough nutritious food to eat due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. This is a Patch social good project; Feeding America receives 100 percent of donations. Find out how you can donate in your community or find a food pantry near you.
