A Boston man fleeing a traffic stop slammed into four police officers with his car and attempted a “reckless” high-speed getaway through residential neighborhoods before crashing into a pole and running on foot before he was arrested and charged with multiple drugs and weapons charges, officials said.
Michael McKoy, 35, of Boston was driving a wanted vehicle when police tried to conduct a traffic stop on Glenway Street near Franklin Park in Roxbury just before 7 p.m. on Saturday, police said.
“As officers approached the vehicle, the operator suddenly reached down, placing the car into gear and stepped on the gas causing the car to lunge forward, striking several officers who were knocked to the ground and nearly pinned against the numerous vehicles in the area,” according to a police report.
The officers are being treated for non-life-threatening injures. A police cruiser was also damaged, according to reports.
As McCoy tore off in an attempted get away, police were forced to drop the chase due to the “extremely blatant disregard for the safety of the public.” Police said McKoy led cops the wrong way down one-way streets “at an accelerated rate of speed while recklessly weaving in and out of traffic.” During the chase, police said McCoy ran stop signs and tossed unknown items from his vehicle.
Police caught up with McKoy after his vehicle crashed into a city light pole in Upham’s Corner, where he took off on foot leading officers on a nearly mile-long foot chase before he was apprehended at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard.
Inside McKoy’s car, police found six loaded guns, 116 rounds of live ammunition, 22 bags of crack cocaine, more than 70 grams of heroin or fentanyl, a large hunting knife and $25,000.
McKoy will be arraigned on six counts of unlawful possession of a firearm — subsequent offense, four counts of carrying a loaded firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition — subsequent offense, two counts of unlawful possession of a large capacity feeding device, four counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, trafficking crack cocaine, possession of heroin or fentanyl with intent to distribute — subsequent offense and numerous traffic violations.
