As temperatures start to warm up again, winds will become a bigger issue - KSNB

HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The sunshine is back today and so are some warmer temperatures. Highs will warm up to between the mid 40s northeast to the upper 50s southwest. Winds will be strengthening today, increasing to 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph out of the south southwest. These stronger winds combined with low relative humidity levels, will bring the fire threat up to a critical risk this afternoon in Southwest Nebraska. Winds will remain a bit breezy out of the south tonight at 10 to 20 mph as skies remain clear much of the night. Some clouds will move in from the west toward sunrise. We’ll see lows tonight in the upper 20s and low to mid 30s.

A cold front is going to race eastward through the area Saturday morning. Skies will be partly to mostly cloudy the majority of the day. There is even a chance for a few sprinkles or very light rain behind the cold front in the afternoon. The biggest issue with the front passing through is the wind. We’ll go from a breezy southerly winds to a very strong northwest wind. In the western part of the Local4 viewing area, we could see sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts approaching 50 mph. Blowing dust could be an issue. They won’t be quite as strong in Central Nebraska, but winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 40 mph will be possible. By the end of the afternoon, skies will start to clear up and move to the east. High temperatures tomorrow will mostly be in the 50s with perhaps some lower 60s in Northern Kansas. But I do expect temperatures to drop a bit in the afternoon behind the cold front. With clear skies, but continued breezy west northwest winds Saturday night, we’ll see lows Sunday morning in the mid to upper 20s and lower 30s.

Sunday may end out being the nicer day of the weekend despite slightly cooler temperatures. Winds will still be breezy out of the west at 10 to 20 mph, but that will be lighter than Saturday. Skies will be mostly sunny. We’ll see high temperatures from around 50° northeast to the upper 50s southwest. Monday may still be a bit on the breezy, but plenty of sun and temperatures into the mid to upper 50s and lower 60s should make for a pretty decent day. It may cool just a couple of degrees on Tuesday, but it will still be fairly nice under mostly sunny skies. Highs will be in the 50s and lower 60s. We should see a big jump in temperatures into the mid to upper 60s and lower 70s under mostly sunny skies. Thursday also looks good with upper 50s north to upper 60s south under sunny skies.
