DENVER — Pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. is “doing a lot better” and the Astros expect him to pitch during their upcoming homestand, manager Dusty Baker said Tuesday.
McCullers missed his scheduled turn in the rotation Tuesday due to an illness. Earlier this week, Baker said McCullers’ breathing was labored and he had problems with his “equilibrium.”
Despite numerous requests, the Astros have not made McCullers available for interviews since his last start April 14 against the Tigers, after which McCullers revealed he suffered side effects from the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine. McCullers said he received the shot “a few days” before his start.
“He’s doing fine,” Baker said. “Lance is doing a lot better. He’s going to pitch when we get back home. We’re not exactly sure where he’s penciled in yet — we haven’t decided. He felt better. He’s been feeling better daily.”
Luis Garcia started Tuesday against the Rockies in McCullers’ place. Jose Urquidy is scheduled to pitch Wednesday. The Los Angeles Angels come to Minute Maid Park for a four-game series starting on Thursday, which is Zack Greinke’s scheduled day to start.
