AUGUSTA — A New York man was being held on drug trafficking charges Sunday at the Kennebec County Correctional Center after he fled a traffic stop in Augusta on Friday night, according to officials.

Police have identified the suspect as Donte Johnson, 26.

Augusta police said Johnson ran into the woods after officers stopped a vehicle on State Street at 9:44 p.m. Friday.

Johnson threw a large amount of drugs and cash onto the ground, which were recovered with the help of a dog team from the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office, according to reports. Officers, however, did not locate Johnson on Friday night.

At about 8:05 a.m. Saturday, an officer saw Johnson in the same area as the suspect entered a vehicle. That vehicle was stopped and Johnson was identified as the man who had run from police the previous night, according to officers.

Johnson was charged with two counts of aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs, failure to provide correct name, refusing to submit to arrest and/or detention and criminal forfeiture.

He was being held Sunday on $150,000 bail.
