School Start Dates for Champaign-Urbana Area School Districts
In some communities, the sight of yellow school buses hitting the streets in August will be another sign of a return to “normalcy.”
Why is it important for the public to know school start dates? For one thing, the start of school also means the time when drivers need to be extra careful on the roads, with many more children out and about walking and biking to school. And it’s also when yellow buses return to our streets, which may disrupt some traffic patterns that we’ve become accustomed to in the past 16 months.
This article contains a listing of public school district start dates for communities in and around Champaign County, including Champaign, Urbana, Mahomet, Monticello, Fisher, St. Joseph, Rantoul, and more.
If there’s one thing we learned in 2020, it’s that everything is subject to change all the time. It’s important to note that these are the SCHEDULED start dates. While things appear to be fairly stable in August 2021 as it relates to school openings, we still feel compelled to post this disclaimer. Christie Clinic is encouraging parents to schedule a school physical soon.
Starting school physical appointments now will allow Christie Clinic Department of Pediatrics and Department of Family Medicine to best serve all patients while maintaining a safe visit environment. Enhanced precautions are in place to keep patients and team members safe including additional hours, visitor restrictions and social distancing to reduce the number of people in our facilities.
Parents can currently make back-to-school appointments for their children through their MyChristie patient portal or online at christieclinic.com.
School Start Dates have been collected using information provided by school districts. Please contact the schools directly with questions.
Champaign and Urbana appear first; all other districts appear below them in alphabetical order.
Unit 4 staff is planning for students to return for in-person, full-day schedules, five days a week for the 2021-22 school year. Students will return to their home schools. After a year’s absence, the two Unit 4 balanced calendar elementary schools (Kenwood Elementary and Barkstall Elementary) will reopen on time with their “traditional” schedules intact.
Thursday, July 22: First Day for Balanced Calendar Student Attendance (grades 1-5)
Kindergarten families have different start dates, the year starts with family conferences on July 22. Half of the kindergarten class will attend on one day, with the other half attending the next day. This schedule is determined by each classroom. All kindergarten students will be in attendance daily starting Tuesday, July 27.
Thursday, Aug. 19: First Day for Regular Calendar Student Attendance (grades 1-9)
Kindergarten families have different start dates, the year starts with family conferences on Aug. 19. Half of the kindergarten class will attend on one day, with the other half attending the next day. This schedule is determined by each classroom. All kindergarten students will be in attendance daily starting Tuesday, Aug. 24.
Friday, Aug. 20: First Day for Regular Calendar Student Attendance (grades 10-12)
Wednesday, Aug. 18: First Day for Student Attendance for grades 1-5 (elementary), grade 6 (middle school) and grade 9 (high school). Half of kindergarten classrooms in attendance.
Thursday, Aug. 19: All grades 1-12 in attendance. First Day for Student Attendance for grades 7-8 and 10-12; other half of kindergarten classrooms in attendance; first day for Urbana Early Childhood.
Friday, Aug. 20: All students in attendance.
Tuesday, Aug. 17: 2:05 p.m. dismissal, all schools
Thursday, Aug. 26: early dismissal at 2:20 p.m., all schools
Tuesday, Aug. 17: early dismissal at 11:45 a.m.
Tuesday, Aug. 17: Half day of student attendance, half day dismissal at 11:15 a.m. (all students grades 1-12)
Wednesday, Aug. 18: First full day of student attendance with lunch served (all students grades 1-12)
Thursday, Aug. 19: First full day of student attendance for kindergarten students
Wednesday, Aug. 18: first day of attendance for all students
Wednesday, Aug. 18: First student day. Dismissal time is subject to change, per the website.
