PEORIA (WEEK) - The Memphis-to-Peoria run is fast approaching, starting July 14, while the grocery chain Hy-Vee is launching its "Register Round Up" -- all to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
The runners are raising money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital so families can get cancer treatment for their children at no cost.
Lee Hall is making the run again, just as he's done for 35 years.
"For me, it's become a labor of love," said Hall.
"I was assigned to cover it the first year in 1986 and I've only missed one since. So, I got hooked on the event, the run, the camaraderie, the fun. And the kids reeled me in," Hall said.
Hall tries to run three miles at a time. He starts training each spring, and he always feels a great sense of accomplishment when he finishes the event.
"I don't really consider myself a runner. I'm running maybe a mile and walking part of it when I first start off, and then, hopefully, by the time the run gets here I'm able to finish a segment without stopping," he said.
This is the 40th annual Memphis-to-Peoria run. This year's goal is to raise $1 million.
Hy-Vee Register Round Up underway
Meantime, Hy-Vee grocery stores have launched their so-called "Register Round Up" for St. Jude.
Starting Monday and running until the July 17 telethon, customers shopping at 11 area Hy-Vee stores can donate at the checkout by rounding their purchases to the nearest dollar, or more if they like.
Volunteers will also help bag groceries on the weekend of July 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with any tips going to St. Jude as well.
