Update (3:49 p.m.): The game is scheduled to begin at 4:20 p.m.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — The start of the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians game Sunday at Progressive Field has been delayed due to rain.
It began raining in the middle of the national anthem.
It’s no longer raining but the tarp remains on the field and no new start time has been announced. More rain appears to be headed this way.
The game was scheduled to start at 1:10 p.m.
The Red Sox will try for the three-game series sweep whenever it does begin. Red Sox righty Tanner Houck (0-3, 3.43 ERA) will pitch opposite Cleveland righty Eli Morgan (2-6, 5.98 ERA).
Kyle Schwarber will lead off for the Red Sox for the first time since being acquired. He started 21 games in the leadoff spot for the Washington Nationals this season. He went 26-for-77 (.338) with a .416 on-base percentage, .974 slugging percentage, 1.390 OPS, 16 homers, one double, 22 runs and 27 RBIs there.
The Red Sox will travel to Tampa after today’s game. They open a four-game series against the Rays in St. Petersburg on Monday.
