ISU freshman says being blind won't stop him from success - HOI ABC

NORMAL (Heart of Illinois ABC) -- Ethan Edwards is a freshman at Illinois State University. Like many other students, he's excited for the next four years, but he needs some extra help along the way.

"Blindness is not a barrier to your success," said Edwards.

Edwards was born with Leber's Congenital Amaurosis or LCA. He said his eyes are healthy, but the gene that tells his eyes to process the image, does not work well.

"I can see like lights, shadows, outlines, but that's about it," said Edwards.

Although, that wasn't going to stop Edwards from going to college.

With the help of his guide dog, Ginsburg, he said he's confident to roam campus and meet new people.

"Having the dog, that piece of mind that, ya know, I'm safe and going the right direction, it's been great having the dog on campus," said Edwards.

Now, he's ready to pursue his passion and become a journalist.

"I've always had a knack of like, ya know, talking to others, public speaking, communicating, kind of being on the forefront of what's going on," said Edwards.

Edwards said there is often a stigma around people who are blind, like they need help with everything. Edwards said it was not true.

"It'll be a good way to kind of prove this barrier wrong for a lot of people," said Edwards.

For the next four years, Edwards said he'll continue to break those barriers.

"I can do the same things everyone else can do," said Edwards.
