PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) -- Cardinals manager Mike Shildt confirmed Sunday afternoon that starting pitcher Miles Mikolas will return to the rotation sometime this week. A decision that was evident to everyone who attended Mikolas' final rehab start in Peoria on Saturday night.

Mikolas put his all-star pedigree on display in his start for the Chiefs, tossing 7 innings and striking out 8 batters.

"Fastball was coming out of my hand really good, especially in the middle of the game and I was able to move it to both sides of the plate, get in on some guys, break some bats. Felt good to be in command and show these young hitters a thing or two," said Mikolas.

The 32-year-old proved his stuff is still good and that he can pitch long enough into a game.

"As much as I probably hate to admit it, I think this was a start I need to get a little bit longer into the game. It's been a lot of fun, not as fun as pitching in the big leagues, but it's been a lot of fun and I've been having a great time trying to drop my little nuggets of wisdom on guys, if they'll let me kind of talk their ear off," explained Mikolas.

From Memphis, Tennessee to Springfield, Missouri and even Peoria, Illinois, his Chevy Tahoe has put some miles on it, but it's finally headed back to St. Louis.

"It's been a tough road back, longer than anyone wants to be out of commission, but it feels great to be back. It's been a fun, be it spiritual journey back across the Midwest and some of the leagues I used to play in," continued Mikolas.

It's expected Mikolas will pitch either Thursday against the Brewers or Friday against the Pirates. Both games are part of an eight-game homestand for the Cardinals, who are currently riding a six-game winning streak and have won eight of their last nine games.

"That'll be great to see it back in St. Louis and hopefully I can feed off of that and have some successful outings," said Mikolas.

As for the Chiefs, they fell 4-1 Sunday afternoon to the Cedar Rapids Kernels.
